Beyoncé is the first woman to top US album charts in 2022 with ‘Renaissance’



Beyoncé’s just-released seventh album, ‘Renaissance’, has topped the Billboard 200 chart in the US, continuing her unbroken streak of albums debuting at Number One.

All seven of the artist’s studio albums have peaked in the top spot, however, the release of ‘Renaissance’ is notably significant in that it’s already become Bey’s highest-charting album in every major market. In addition to the US, it’s debuted at Number One in the UK, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. It’s likely to top the Canadian chart as well, however data for that is yet to be released.

‘Renaissance’ also came in at Number Two in Germany, beating her last album, 2016’s ‘Lemonade’, by one place. The only downtick in sales between ‘Lemonade’ and ‘Renaissance’ happened in Switzerland – ‘Renaissance’ debuted at Number Three, one spot below where ‘Lemonade’ peaked.

In its first week of domestic release, ‘Renaissance’ shifted 332,000 equivalent album units. As Billboard reports, this makes it the year’s biggest week for any record released by a solo female artist – massively usurping Lizzo, who formerly held the record with 69,000 units of ‘Special’ shifted in its first week – as well as the second biggest sales week altogether; Harry Styles’ latest, ‘Harry’s House’, shifted 521,000 units in its first week.

In terms of traditional album sales – whereby only full-album purchases (across both physical and digital platforms) are counted, with streaming numbers having no factor – ‘Renaissance’ shifted a total of 190,000 copies. 121,000 of those were CDs, while 43,000 sales came from digital downloads, and 26,000 from vinyl copies.

Billboard notes that 72 per cent of CD copies were sold online, and while the bulk of the album’s units were tracked from streaming numbers, ‘Renaissance’ still would have topped this week’s Billboard 200 on traditional sales alone. It also would have topped the chart without a single copy sold, given the insane numbers it did on streaming platforms. This week’s Number Two record, Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’, shifted 104,000 units altogether.

With its 26,000 copies sold, the vinyl release of ‘Renaissance’ has become the highest-selling release of its kind – an R&B or hip-hop album released by a woman – since Luminate (which the Billboard 200 is based on) began tracking sales in 1991. The album is currently hard to find on the format – Bey’s webstore sold out of copies from the first pressing before it was released – however a second pressing will be released on September 16.

With the monumental sales week she’s had, Beyoncé is the woman to have an album top the Billboard 200 in 2022. The last record to achieve the feat was ‘30’ by Adele, which arrived last November. Notably, both ‘Renaissance’ and ‘30’ – and ‘Harry’s House’, for that matter – were released through Columbia Records.

In a four-star review of ‘Renaissance’ – which officially arrived on July 29 – NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams said Beyoncé’s latest album “continue[s] leading the charge to bring Black culture back to the forefront of house and dance scenes”. Among other fans of the album were Lil Nas X, who declared that ‘Renaissance’ is “kinda changing my life somehow”.

Since the release of ‘Renaissance’, Beyoncé has a four-track EP of ‘Break My Soul’ remixes as well as a standalone remix helmed by herself and Madonna. There’s also been a couple of controversies over the album, with Bey being forced to scrub an ableist lyric from the track ‘Heated’, and an interpolation of Kelis’ song ‘Milkshake’ from ‘Energy’.

Primavera Sound Festival 2023: Blur, Depeche Mode, Kendrick Lamar and Rosalía announced to headline



Primavera Sound Festival has announced its line-up for 2023, with Depeche Mode, Blur, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalía and more set to headline.

The 2023 instalment of the festival, which will take place in both Barcelona and Madrid, will also feature headliners including Halsey, FKA twigs, Skrillex, St. Vincent, The Moldy Peaches, Calvin Harris and Le Tigre.

Pet Shop Boys will also perform at the the festival on Wednesday’s free day.

Earlier this year, Primavera Sound announced that the festival will take place in both Barcelona and Madrid for the first time, sharing in a press statement that the two cities will “mirror each other on two consecutive weekends”, taking place at The Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona from June 1-3, and the Ciudad del Rock in Arganda del Rey in Madrid from June 8-10.

In total there will be over 200 performances in each city, which will feature a “shared line-up shared 620 kilometers apart, with a few small exceptions”.

Depeche Mode’s headline performance will mark their stage comeback after five years.

A press statement from the festival read: “Look for yourself in the Primavera Sound 2023 line-up… and find yourself. Because we assure you that you are there. After twenty editions, the festival is the mirror in which the community that will come from near and far to Barcelona and for the first time to Madrid next June looks at itself and recognises itself, but after everything it has experienced, this reflection goes in two directions, marking the richest musical itinerary we can think of: Primavera Sound also looks for and finds itself in its own audience.

“The learning is therefore twofold, just like the venues where a line-up will be deployed in which everything matters, full of surprises and at the same time familiar.”

The festival is also set to welcome the likes of Turnstile, Arlo Parks, Måneskin, PinkPantheress, Christine And The Queens, Fred again.., Caroline Polachek, The Voidz, Japanese Breakfast and many more.

The 1975 worked on unreleased version of Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’



Matty Healy has revealed that The 1975 worked on Taylor Swift‘s latest album ‘Midnights’, but said those songs “never came out”.

During a recent interview with Kroq’s DTS Sound Space, Healy recalled how Swift had heard some of his band’s latest record ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’ through Jack Antonoff prior to its release.

Antonoff worked as a producer on that record as well as ‘Midnights’, and has helmed many of Swift’s other studio projects.

Asked whether the star “returned the favour” and let Healy and co. have an early preview of ‘Midnights’, the frontman replied: “Yeah. We actually worked a bit on that. But then [that] version of it never came out.”

Some audience members then booed in response to the revelation, to which Healy said: “No, no, no – that’s not how it works. It [didn’t work out] for reasons that are not to be criticised. She’s amazing.”

Healy appeared as a featured guest on a “leaked” tracklist for ‘Midnights’ in September, but he subsequently confirmed it was fake.

Later, the musician shut down rumours of a collaboration with Swift during an interview with BBC Radio 1.

“We’d love to… love to work with Taylor Swift,” Healy said. “[I] love Taylor Swift… think she’s one of the best songwriters. Yeah, no… we haven’t done that. We’d love to though, wouldn’t we?”

Back in 2019, Healy said he wanted to produce an “intimate acoustic album” for Swift. He later explained that he didn’t take the opportunity to ask the singer to team up on a project when the pair crossed paths at the NME Awards 2020.

The 1975 are currently out on a North American headline tour, which kicked off earlier this month.

Last night’s show in Los Angeles (November 28) saw Phoebe Bridgers make a surprise on-stage appearance to cover ‘Milk’.

The 1975 are set to bring their ‘At Their Very Best’ tour to the UK and Ireland in January 2023. It was confirmed last week that the band’s Dirty Hit label mate Bonnie Kemplay will support them at those shows. You can find any remaining tickets here.

Kanye West walks out of interview after being challenged over antisemitic views



Kanye West walked out of an interview yesterday (November 28) after being challenged over his antisemitic views.

As Consequence reports, the rapper was recording a conversation for Tim Pool’s Timcast podcast with alt-right political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos and white nationalist Nick Fuentes.

The discussion began with Pool asking Ye about his recent meeting with Donald Trump, but the ‘DONDA’ artist quickly said that he had to “go to the heart of this antisemite claim”.

It’s said that he then went into an incoherent rant – accusing Gap, Adidas, Vogue, and Trump and Barack Obama of taking part in Jewish-led conspiracy to end his career. When Pool pushed back against West, the rapper threatened to stop the interview.

West said: “I feel like it’s a setup… I’m going to walk the F off the show if I’m having to talk about, ‘You can’t say Jewish people did it’, when every sensible person knows – that Jon Stewart knows – what happened to me, and they took it too far.”

Soon afterwards, Ye compared himself to Martin Luther King Jr. “As I’m getting hosed down every day by the press and financially, I’m just standing there,” he explained.

“When I found out they were trying to put me in jail, it was like a dog was biting my arm and I almost shed a tear. Almost. But I still walked in stride through it.”

In response, Pool acknowledged to West that “they have been extremely unfair”, leading Ye to ask who he meant by “they… we can’t say who they is?”. Pool said he was referring to the “corporate press” before Fuentes cut in to defend West.

The rapper then removed his headphones and left the studio. You can watch the conversation in the above video.

Ye has faced significant backlash of late after making a series of antisemitic remarks, wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt, and expressing false claims about the death of George Floyd.

Additionally, it was alleged that he had praised “Hitler and the Nazis” during a 2018 interview with TMZ (the conversation in question is said to have been edited prior to its release).
