Martin Scorsese has a perfectly hilarious response to the fake mafia movie Goncharov. Scorsese is a versatile director who has helmed many well-regarded works including the Best Picture-winning 2006 film The Departed. He is perhaps best known for his contributions to the mafia subgenre, returning to the well periodically throughout his career for projects including 1973’s Mean Streets, 1990’s GoodFellas, 1995’s Casino, and 2019’s The Irishman.
Because of this longstanding tradition, Tumblr has recently been having fun by creating an imaginary lost mafia film titled Goncharov, supposedly produced by Scorcese and starring Robert De Niro. On her official TikTok account, the iconic director’s daughter Francesca Scorsese did a Stitch with a user who was wondering if she had ever discussed Goncharov with her father. In response, she shared a screenshot of a text chat with her dad where she sent him a New York Times article about Goncharov, asking him “did u see this?” His response was, “Yes. I made that film years ago.” Check out the video below:

Scorsese’s hilarious response proves that the viral cult of Goncharov has now reached as wide an audience as possible. The story of the film, which allegedly came out around the same time as 1973’s Mean Streets, can be traced back several years to a Tumblr post where a user shared a bizarre tag that came with a pair of boots that seemed to be advertising a Scorsese-produced film called Goncharov reading, among other things, ““A film by Matteo JWHJ0715.” That post lay dormant until August 2020, when another user posted it along with a screenshot of a joking comment reading ““this idiot hasn’t seen goncharov.” In turn, that post lay dormant until it exploded this month.
The post resurfaced as hundreds of Tumblr users piled on, adding their own made-up details to the fictional film. These details include a jam-packed cast that features iconic actor Gene Hackman along with Scorsese collaborators like Mean Streets‘ De Niro and Harvey Keitel as well as The Irishman‘s Al Pacino. There is now also a full-blown poster and even fan art imagining two of the characters’ homoerotic tension. Supposedly, the plot follows a Russian hit man named Goncharov who used to own a disco.
Before long, Goncharov was the #1 trending topic on Tumblr and has now obviously reached Martin Scorsese himself. It seems like there are now only two places for this meme to go from here. First, it could slowly stumble back into obscurity, where it began. However, should fans wish to keep up the fun for even longer, some enterprising young filmmakers could work to create clips or even a full feature bringing the “long lost” title to life once and for all, allowing it to stand proudly alongside other classics from its alleged producer like Gangs of New York.
