John Wick and Bullet Train director David Leitch reveals new plot details for his upcoming action flick with Ryan Gosling titled The Fall Guy. The Hollywood stuntman-turned-filmmaker made his uncredited directorial debut in 2014 with John Wick, working alongside Chad Stahelski. Since then, Leitch has churned out hit after hit, helming Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. His latest project is another high-octane assassin thriller, Bullet Train, which features a star-studded cast led by Brad Pitt and premieres in theaters this Friday on August 5.
Gosling is fresh off headlining Netflix’s espionage thriller, The Gray Man, from Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and the actor is already committed to another action flick. Written by Hobbs & Shaw‘s Drew Pearce and directed by Leitch, The Fall Guy is based on the ABC television series of the same name which aired from 1981-1986 and starred Lee Majors, Douglas Barr, and Heather Thomas as Hollywood stunt performers who moonlight as bounty hunters. So far, Gosling is the only confirmed member of the Fall Guy film cast.
During a recent interview with Collider promoting Bullet Train, Leitch was asked to shed some light on The Fall Guy. The John Wick director was happy to oblige and share some details about the inspiration behind the film, its plot, and the release window Universal Pictures is aiming for. Read what Leitch shared about The Fall Guy below:
I can tell you a little. It’s a reimagining of the show from the ’80s, the late ’70s, early ’80s, starring Lee Majors. It’s about a stuntman who gets embroiled in some crazy drama outside of the movie business, and mayhem ensues. And so, there’s fun and action, and we’re trying to make a big summer movie with it. And Universal’s incredibly supportive, and Ryan’s been really collaborative on the material, and we’re starting shooting in October. And so, we’re in pre-production right now.
We’ll definitely want to have fun with the movie world. I think, again, for all of us involved, it’s sort of like, “Yes, it’s about a stuntman.” So whatever drama that’s happening to this guy, it’s like any other movie. It’s a great world for that drama to be happening in. And then it’s so rich with anecdotes from Kelly [McCormick, producer]’s experiences, my experiences, Ryan’s experiences. We’re definitely going to have a lot of fun playing with the movie, our movie experiences inside of this movie.
Based on his comments, it sounds like The Fall Guy is a deeply personal project for Leitch that draws from his own experience as a Hollywood stuntman, acting as Brad Pitt’s stunt double numerous times and winning awards for his work on the Bourne franchise. Like the TV series on which it is based, The Fall Guy will follow Gosling as a Hollywood stuntman who doubles as a bounty hunter. Perhaps not by coincidence, Gosling has already played a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver in the 2011 film Drive and the following year, the actor played a motorcycle stunt rider who also leads a life of crime in The Place Beyond the Pines.
With The Fall Guy, Leitch’s intention is to “make a big summer movie,” as many of his projects are. However, it’s possible that the fate of his next action flick rests on his current one, Bullet Train, and its performance at the summer box office where it is expected to gross $30 million in its opening weekend, only a third of its overall budget. Leitch was wise to have another project already in the works at Universal before Bullet Train releases, just in case it disappoints financially in today’s fractured moviegoing landscape. The Fall Guy begins filming in Australia this October.
