One of the stars of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Dan Fogler, responds to a fan cast of him as the Thing in Marvel’s Fantastic Four and calls it a dream role. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them was released in 2016 as an expansion of the Wizarding World franchise, spinning out from Harry Potter. The film starred Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, and Fogler, who was mainly known for comedy films like Fanboys, Balls of Fury, and Good Luck Chuck.
Fogler went on to reprise his role of Muggle Jacob Kowalski in two Fantastic Beast sequels released in 2018 and 2022. He also recently appeared on the Paramount+ series The Offer playing acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola during the making of The Godfather. So far, the chances for another installment in the Fantastic Beasts franchise remain unclear as the latest entry, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, underperformed at the box office, becoming the first film in the Wizarding World franchise not to gross $100 million domestically. Now, Fogler seems to have his eyes set on another fantastic franchise.
Fogler took to Twitter to express his interest in playing Fantastic Four character the Thing. The actor responded to a fan cast, even dropping a reference to Yancy Street, where the Thing grew up in New York. See the tweet down below.
Fogler would certainly offer a different approach from other depictions of the Thing in past adaptations. Michael Chiklis played the role in the first two Fantastic Four films, and since he wore a practical suit, they went for an actor who was not only a fan but one that fit the physical requirement. In 2015’s Fantastic Four, Jamie Bell was cast as the Thing. While Bell might not have fit the physical look of the character, he provided a more silent intensity and shocking contrast with his transformation into the commanding Thing. Fogler’s comedic background may make him seem like an odd pick at first. However, while the Thing is known as a fighter, he is also beloved for his larger-than-life personality and sense of humor. Folger might be exactly the type of performer Marvel should seek for the role.
Anticipation for the MCU’s take on Fantastic Four is certainly high, as the characters are the foundation of the Marvel Comics universe, and audiences have been waiting for a good film version of the team’s story. Fantastic Four will kick off Phase 6 of the MCU in a couple of years. It might be some time until any casting news is announced, but Fogler could easily show up on Marvel Studios’ radar and move from Fantastic Beasts to Fantastic Four.
