Ronald J. Sider, Who Urged Evangelicals to Social Action, Dies at 82

That included trying to counter the support among white evangelicals for Donald J. Trump. In 2020 he edited “The Spiritual Danger of Donald Trump: 30 Evangelical Christians on Justice, Truth, and Moral Integrity,” a book that, he told Sight magazine, “grew out of an obvious concern that white evangelicals were not thinking in an adequately biblical way in their reflections on Donald Trump, his character and his policies.”

Dr. Sider wasn’t without his conservative side, especially concerning same-sex marriage and abortion. And he cautioned against being overly focused on causes — one of his books was called “I Am Not a Social Activist: Making Jesus the Agenda” (2008). But he had hope that a faith of personal salvation and one of advocacy on social issues could coexist.

“I long for the day when every village, town and city has congregations of Christians so in love with Jesus Christ that they lead scores of people to accept him as personal Savior and Lord every year,” he wrote in “Good News and Good Works: A Theology for the Whole Gospel” (1999), “and so sensitive to the cry of the poor and oppressed that they work vigorously for justice, peace and freedom.”

Ronald James Sider was born on Sept. 17, 1939, in Stevensville, Ontario. His father, James, was a farmer and later a pastor, and his mother, Ida (Cline) Sider, was a homemaker.

He grew up attending the Brethren Church of Christ. His interest in social activism started there.

“It was thoroughly evangelical but had not experienced the wrenching early-20th-century divisions of the social gospel-fundamentalist battles that helped produce the huge gulf between evangelism and social action,” he wrote in “Good News and Good Works.” “In my early years in the faith I just assumed that devout Christians shared the gospel, as my missionary uncle had in Africa, and also cared for the poor, as my church’s relief agency was doing.”

He earned a bachelor’s degree at Waterloo Lutheran University in 1962 and later in the decade earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history at Yale University and a bachelor of divinity degree at Yale Divinity School. He was an ordained minister in both the Mennonite and Brethren of Christ denominations, but teaching was his main career.

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford walked the red carpet together on Friday night for the premiere of their new Yellowstone spin-off series 1923.

The Oscar-winning Mirren, 77, and the legendary Ford, 80, have officially entered the sprawling universe of Yellowstone as they anchor the latest chapter in the Dutton family’s origin story.

The iconic actors play the central pair of Jacob and Cara Dutton, who struggle to keep their ranching empire during the titular year of 1923.

Dame Helen Mirren exuded chic elegance in her tailored black suit with its plunging lace neckline.

The acclaimed English actress wore her hair up and showcased rectangular gold statement earrings.

Mirren’s hands donned the stylish accessory of black lace gloves and she carried a black designer handbag that was simple, yet exquisite.

The Queen star arrived with her husband of 25 years, Oscar-nominated director Taylor Hackford, 77.

Ford arrived solo and walked the red carpet without his wife, Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart, 58.

The cinematic icon  – who will soon don his fedora for a fifth and final time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – embodied a bit of the Western genre in dressy blue jeans and a navy blazer.

Sporting some stubble on his chiseled features, Ford exuded warm charisma as he smiled big and bright for the cameras alongside his regal leading lady.

According to an official plot synopsis released by Paramount+, Ford and Mirren’s new show is set during ‘the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.’

‘You have no rights here,’ growls Mirren’s Cara Dutton at the start of 1923’s first trailer.

Talk of a ‘range war’ soon takes hold as the Duttons come into conflict with Timothy Dalton’s wealthy new neighbor named Donald Whitfield.

Decadence, dust, guns and grit abound throughout the 90-second teaser as Harrison and Helen fully inhabit their tough-talking characters.

‘Men kill quick with a bullet or a noose,’ says Mirren, affecting an Irish purr. ‘But your fight is with me and I kill much slower.’

Pistols are drawn and bodies are buried in the first glimpses of 1923.

Other highlights include sweeping landscapes and a conflict with Native Americans. An African lion even roars out of a bush in the final few seconds of the trailer.

‘You are no god Jacob Dutton!’ shouts one angry cowboy at Harrison Ford.

‘Tell the world what happens when they cross me,’ Ford says at one point in his signature rasp.

It all combines to create an exhilarating rush of suspense and adventure as the Old West is thoroughly brought to life once again by Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan — the creative force who has revived the Western genre, almost singlehandedly.

Premiering December 18th on Paramount+, 1923 is the second Yellowstone prequel after last year’s 1883.

That show tracked the Dutton’s as they traveled to Montana and fought to found the family ranch.

It starred real-life couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as the central couple James and Margaret Dutton, with Sam Elliot riding in to play their wagon train’s rugged leader.

Yellowstone’s fifth season premiered in early November, garnering 12.1 million viewers and cementing its place as a pop culture juggernaut.

The star that started it all remains Kevin Costner, 67, who reportedly anchors Yellowstone for a fee of $1.3 million per episode.

1923 looks like it will be a surefire hit for the storied pair of stars that have saddled up to tell the tale.

‘You attack my family,’ says Harrison near the end of the trailer. ‘It’s gonna be the last thing you ever do.’
