After a reign of 52 years, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark bows.
The 83-year-old monarch formally abdicated on January 14, handing over his duties to his eldest son. Crown Prince Frederiknow King Frederik 10.
The abdication is Denmark's first in nearly 900 years, with the final such occasion being in 1146 when King Erik he left his function to enter a monastery.
Historically, the succession to the Danish throne happened after the demise of a sovereign. However this time, it occurred when Margrethe – who will all the time be referred to as the queen – signed an announcement of her abdication throughout a gathering of the Council of State at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.
Then the king grew to become the brand new sovereign, and his spouse took the title of Queen Mary. (She was previously Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark.) Her 18-year-old son Prince Christian is now the brand new Crown Prince and inheritor to the throne. Subsequent in line is his sister Princess Isabella16, adopted by his 13-year-old brother Prince Vincent and his twin sister Princess Josephine.
